BRE is an agile way of defining and executing business rules. This is possible due to the separation of application logic from business policies. A BRE repository consists of tables containing information about business rules, application logic, attributes, and relationships. The definition of a Business Rule is contained in the corresponding BRE model. The BRE model also includes a policy class. The Policy class is the integration glue between a BR and an application.

Rules are used to detect and respond to business situations. When these events occur, the rules evaluate a series of organizational, product, and regulatory rules and generate business knowledge. Workflows respond to the events or overload a routing point. A BRME is able to answer questions from business users without a developer's help. By using a BRMS, SMEs can develop and maintain a business rule application without coding.

A BRME can be built using a visual design framework. This allows rapid development. Some rule engines also support dynamic languages and visual design, which is helpful in fast-paced projects. For example, insurance regulations and new statistics can change the quote in a short period of time. Moreover, business rules can be easily deployed and managed without any coding. But you need to ensure that the rules are well written and maintainable.
